Incremental Reading
Incremental Reading lets you work through long-form source material a little at a time, capturing the most important parts as you go and gradually turning them into study cards. Instead of reading an article in one sitting, you read it across multiple sessions on a spaced schedule — keeping the most valuable material in front of you while letting the rest wait.
How It Works
1. Add an Incremental Reading Cell
Create a new cell and choose Incremental Reading as the cell type, then import a source. For now, websites are the supported source type — paste the URL of the page you want to read and Brainy will load its content into the cell.
2. Read and Highlight
Work through the imported source and highlight the most important passages as you read. Each highlight is saved as an extract — a snippet of source material set aside for later processing.
Select the text you want to keep and use the highlight shortcut:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
Ctrl + Shift + H / Cmd + Shift + H |
Highlight the selected text |
3. Finish the Session
When you are done reading for now, you can:
- Schedule for Later — set the reading to come back on a future date so you can continue where you left off in a later session
- Mark as Done — finish the source when you have read everything you need
- Exit — leave the session without changing its schedule
Extracts
Every passage you highlight becomes an extract. Extracts are the bridge between raw source material and finished study cards:
- Go through your extracts one at a time and turn each into a Cloze cell
- Use AI support to convert an extract into a cloze automatically — Brainy reads the extract and produces a ready-to-study cloze deletion for you to keep or refine
See the Editor for more on cloze cells, and the AI Assistant for more on AI-powered card generation.
On the Home Screen
The Home dashboard surfaces incremental reading work that needs your attention through two lists:
- Incremental Reading Queue — sources that have passed their due date, ordered by priority so the most important reading comes first
- Pending Extracts — highlighted extracts that still need to be turned into cloze cells
This keeps both halves of the workflow — reading and card creation — visible so nothing you have set aside gets forgotten.
